ChatGPT ads · Australia · you cover the ad spend
Get leads from ChatGPT ads. See the results before you pay.
ChatGPT now runs paid ads. My team picked this up about a month ago. Almost no business in Australia is running them yet. The few who know are doubtful, because it is new. The first month is free. You just cover your own ad spend. You see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
ChatGPT now runs paid ads
Australian agencies put the go live date at 17 April 2026, and OpenAI hasn't published one. Since then, people in Australia on the free ChatGPT plans have been seeing ads. An ad can sit under the answer, in its own box, marked as sponsored. OpenAI says the ad never changes the answer above it. Only people on the free and Go plans see ads, and not anyone OpenAI identifies as under 18.
That is a new place for a customer to find you. Someone asks ChatGPT what to do about a leaking hot water tank, or who can fit a ceiling fan this week. The answer comes back, and your ad can sit under it.
This changes the marketing game absolutely. Think about Facebook ads in 2007. Anything you posted popped off back then, and the people who got in early cleaned up. This looks like the next one of those.
On Facebook you interrupt someone mid doom-scroll. Here the person is already researching something related when your ad shows up. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer. That is why I moved my team onto it.
What I do, and what it costs you
We work for you, for free, and the first month costs you nothing but your own ad spend. That spend goes to OpenAI for the clicks. A click is someone tapping the ad.
The first month is free, so you see the results before you pay us anything. Then, if you want to keep them coming, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. The percentage is agreed in writing before we start. If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing.
Running them means the real work. I write the hints that tell ChatGPT which chats your ad belongs in. I write the ad itself. I point it at a page that can take a call, not a page that talks about you. I read the numbers every day and change what isn't working.
Who the ads bring you
Every day, people ask ChatGPT for your trade in your area. Your ad can sit under that answer. They are not browsing. They are asking for the job.
ChatGPT picks the ad from what the person is asking about right now, not from a list of words I bid on. I give it hints instead: your trade, the jobs you want, the kinds of places people name. OpenAI says those hints guide the match and don't promise a spot in any one chat. The person who sees it is already deciding something. In OpenAI's own words, they are often "learning about a category, comparing options, or deciding what to do next."
How the pay works
- ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
- If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
- Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
- That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
- Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
- We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
- Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
- In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
- Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.
If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.
What OpenAI itself says about the ads
- Ads show only to people on the Free and Go plans. Paid plans never see them.
- No ads to anyone OpenAI identifies as under 18.
- The ad sits below the end of the answer, marked as sponsored, in its own box.
- "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers." The ad and the answer run on separate systems.
- Advertisers never see the chat. They get totals only: views and clicks.
- For paying per click, OpenAI suggests starting at US$3 to US$5 a click. US dollars, so a bit more here. Check the rate the day you start.
- Views and clicks update about every 15 minutes. Spend can lag 7 to 8 hours.
All of that is from OpenAI's own help pages, read on 23 September 2026. It is early and it keeps changing, so I check it again each month.
What I need from you
- Half an hour on the phone. We set the ad account up on the call. You see every dollar of ad spend in it. You pay OpenAI for the clicks, not me.
- A page or a phone number for the ad to send people to. If your page can't take a call on the first screen, I fix that first.
- What a job is worth to you, in your own numbers. That is how we both know when a lead has paid you.
- Someone who answers the phone. A lead that rings out is a lead you paid for and lost.
7 questions people ask me
Do I pay you anything up front?
No. The first month is free. You pay OpenAI for the ad clicks, and that's the only money going out. You see the results for yourself before you pay us anything. Then, to keep them coming, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer, agreed in writing.
So what's the ad spend, and who sets it?
We set a daily cap together, in the ad account. OpenAI suggests starting at US$3 to US$5 a click. Its own rule is that a day can't spend more than double the daily cap, and a week can't spend more than 7 times it. You see every dollar in the account. None of it comes to us.
How do we know a lead came from the ad?
3 ways. The link in the ad carries a tag, so your site can see the visit came from ChatGPT. OpenAI's account shows the clicks you were billed for. And the ad points at a number we can count. Then we compare that with the job value we agreed.
What if it brings me nothing?
If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all. We'll have put the work in for no income. That's the deal, and it is why we only take 10 a month. Nobody can promise what a new ad channel will do. What we can promise is that in the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid.
Can it target my suburb?
Country targeting, yes. Below that, OpenAI says it offers states, cities and postcodes "where available", and it doesn't publish the list for Australia. So I don't promise suburb targeting. What the ad matches on is what the person is asking about, and that often includes the area they name.
Does the ad change what ChatGPT says about me?
No. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems and advertisers can't shape, rank or alter the answers. The ad is a labelled box under the answer. Nothing more.
Why only 10 businesses a month?
The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take. When the 10 are gone, the next spot is next month.
