Can you get ChatGPT to recommend your business?
Short answer, no. You can't buy the answer ChatGPT writes, and OpenAI says advertisers can't change it. What you can buy is the box underneath it. Here's what that box is, and what it can't do for you.
The answer itself is not for sale
OpenAI's own words are plain. Ads "do not influence ChatGPT's answers". It says ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and that advertisers have "no ability to shape, rank, or alter" what ChatGPT says.
It goes further. Seeing an ad, it says, doesn't mean OpenAI endorses or recommends that business. So if somebody offers to put you inside the answer, they're selling you something they haven't got.
What is for sale is the box under the answer
An ad can appear below the end of a response. OpenAI says ads are clearly labelled as sponsored and kept visually separate from the answer. A box can hold more than one thing from one business, and it can hold more than one business.
That is the product. A spot under the answer, in front of somebody who just asked for your trade. You pay per click, which is someone tapping the ad, or per 1,000 times the ad shows. What a ChatGPT ad looks like draws it out.
How the box gets matched to the question
- What the person is asking about in the chat they're in right now.
- The page your ad points at, and the title and copy of the ad itself.
- The hints you wrote about where your work belongs, and the country and areas you picked.
- When ads personalisation is on, some signals from the person's wider use of ChatGPT.
- Where more than one ad fits, OpenAI says it runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction between the ads that fit. In plain words, your money is not the only thing in it.
How ChatGPT decides who sees your ad takes that list apart line by line.
A customer can message you straight from that box
OpenAI says a person can choose to message an advertiser through an ad, to ask questions while they're making up their mind. The advertiser only sees the messages that person sends them. Nothing else about them comes across.
For a trade that's a price question before the call. How much to clear a blocked drain, asked at 10pm. OpenAI doesn't say yet where those messages land for the business. We work out on the call who keeps an eye out for them once OpenAI says where they show up.
Getting mentioned on its own is a different job
People mean 2 different things by "get my business on ChatGPT". One is the box, and you buy that. The other is ChatGPT naming you in the answer, off its own bat.
That second one is not something OpenAI sells, so it's not something I can sell you either. OpenAI has published nothing about how the answer picks one business over another. So anyone who says they can get you named in it is guessing, and I don't sell it. What I do is buy the box and make it worth clicking. How a ChatGPT ad turns into a lead is the rest of that path.
3 questions people ask me about this
So is an ad the same as being recommended?
No, and I don't sell it as one. The answer above the box is written without any advertiser touching it. The box is marked sponsored and sits on its own. What you get is a spot in front of somebody at the minute they ask for your trade. That's worth paying for on its own.
Can I pay to be in the answer itself?
Not through OpenAI. It says ads run on separate systems from the chat model, and that advertisers can't shape, rank or alter what it says. Anyone selling you a spot in the answer should be able to show you where OpenAI offers it. So far, it doesn't.
Will people know it's an ad?
Yes. OpenAI says ads are clearly labelled as sponsored and kept visually separate from the answer, so nobody has to guess which part you paid for. What a ChatGPT ad looks like shows the box and what a person can do with it.
Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers
- ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
- If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
- Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
- That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
- Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
- We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
- Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
- In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
- Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.
If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.

The whole offer, and what I do in a month, sits on the ChatGPT ads page. If you want to picture the box first, what a ChatGPT ad looks like shows it. The matching side is on how ChatGPT decides who sees your ad, and the path from the box to your phone is on how a ChatGPT ad turns into a lead.
30 minutes, then a straight answer
30 minutes on the phone, mostly questions about your business and your customers. You get 2 straight answers. Do people ask ChatGPT for what you do? And is it worth a run, where we only get paid a rev-share or a retainer, sorted once you have seen the results, to find out?
