How a ChatGPT ad turns into a lead

It's 4 steps. Someone asks ChatGPT about a job. Your ad can sit under the answer. They click it, land on your page and ring you. Here's what has to be true at each step, and how we count it.

Step 1. Someone asks, and they're close to buying

People bring real decisions to ChatGPT. OpenAI says they are often "comparing options, or deciding what to do next".

Every day, people ask ChatGPT for your trade in your area, and your ad can sit under that answer. They are not browsing. They are asking for the job.

Step 2. Your ad can show under the answer

The ad can appear below the end of a response. It's marked as sponsored and sits in its own box. The answer above it doesn't change. OpenAI says advertisers can't shape, rank or alter what ChatGPT says.

Only people on the Free and Go plans see ads, and not anyone OpenAI identifies as under 18. So the reader is more likely a homeowner than a big company's account. That's my reading of it, not a number OpenAI has published.

Step 3. They click it and land on your page

A click is someone tapping your ad. That's the moment the money leaves. What happens after it is on you.

The first screen decides the call. What that page has to do is on the page your ad sends people to. If they have to scroll to find your phone, some of them won't.

OpenAI also reads your landing page when it picks which chats your ad fits. A page that doesn't match the ad makes you harder to place, and it loses the people who do click.

Step 3b. Or they message you inside ChatGPT

There's a second path. Someone can message an advertiser through the ad, to ask questions while they're deciding. You see the messages they send you, and nothing else about them.

It's early and it's changing, so I treat it as a bonus. Can you get ChatGPT to recommend your business has the detail on that box.

Step 4. How we know the call came from the ad

  • The ad account shows views, clicks, what a click cost and spend. The spend number lags behind the rest, so read it the next day.
  • The link carries a tag, so your own tools can see the visit came from ChatGPT.
  • The ad points at a number we can count.
  • OpenAI doesn't hand the chat to advertisers. They get totals, like views and clicks.

What counts as a lead that paid you

We agree what a job is worth to you before the ads go on. Not the invoice. What's left after materials and your time.

Then a lead that paid you is a simple thing. It came from the ad, they rang, you did the work and they paid the invoice. That's the number we both look at when we talk about a fee.

3 questions people ask me about the leads

Is this a lead that 5 other blokes get too?

It isn't a shared lead list. The person clicks your ad and lands on your page, and any call comes to you, not to a list. OpenAI does say an ad unit can show more than one advertiser. So a competitor's ad can sit beside yours in the same box.

How many leads will I get?

I can't tell you, and I'm not going to make a number up. What is and isn't proven is on do ChatGPT ads work. That's why we work for free. You find out before you pay us anything, and you still pay OpenAI for the clicks.

What if the phone rings and I'm under a house?

Then that click brought you nothing. Get someone on the phone, or send a text back on every missed call. A lead from an ad goes cold faster than one from a mate's referral.

Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers

  • ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
  • If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
  • Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
  • That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
  • Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
  • We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
  • Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
  • In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
  • Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.

If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.
