ChatGPT ads · Australia · the ad itself

What a ChatGPT ad looks like to your customer

It can sit under the answer, in its own box, marked as sponsored. It has 3 parts. A title, a line or two of copy, and the page it sends people to. The answer above it doesn't change. Here's what your customer sees, and what they can do with it.

The ad can sit under the answer, marked as sponsored

OpenAI's own words: ads "can appear below the end of a response". They're "clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from ChatGPT's response". So your customer reads their answer first. Then your box comes up underneath it.

It isn't dressed up as part of the answer. That's the deal, and I think it helps you. The person has just been told what to do about their problem. Your ad is the bit that says who does it.

You might not be the only ad in the box

OpenAI says you may see one or more ad boxes below a response. That happens "when there's a relevant match to your chat". The unit can carry a single item from a single advertiser. It can also carry several items, or several advertisers.

So there's no promise that you're down there on your own. OpenAI says the box shows when there's a relevant match to the chat. That's why the words you give it matter so much.

An ad has 3 parts and nothing else

  • A title. A short line, and it's the first thing read.
  • The copy. A sentence or two sitting under the title.
  • The landing page. A click is someone tapping the ad, and that page is where they land.

An example I wrote, drawn roughly the shape OpenAI describes. Not a real ad, and not a screenshot. Your licence number goes on the end of that copy line. In NSW it has to be in the ad itself, not only on your page, and other states have their own rule.

OpenAI says it uses the landing page, the title and the copy. All 3 help work out which chats your ad fits. So the page you point at is part of how the ad gets picked. It is also where people land. The page your ad sends people to goes through what has to be on it.

Your customer can click it, hide it, or ask about it

There's a three-dot menu on the ad. From there a person can ask ChatGPT about your ad, and OpenAI says advertisers don't influence what it says back. They can also hide the ad, or report it.

They can message you too. If they do, OpenAI says the advertiser "will only see the messages you send them directly". They don't see the chat above it, and they don't get a name or an email. Can you get ChatGPT to recommend your business covers what's known about where that message goes, and why the answer itself is not for sale.

What that shape means for the words in your ad

You get a title and a couple of lines. The reader is mid-problem, on a phone, and has already read an answer. So the ad has a single job. Say the trade, say the work, and say where you are if they named a place.

Then the click has to land somewhere that takes a call. A page about how long you've been going loses that person. I write the ad and the page together, because OpenAI reads them together. If you'd rather set it up yourself, the step by step is here. If you'd rather I did it, that's what I do. We work for you for free and you cover your own ad spend.

3 questions people ask me about the ad itself

Does my ad go inside the answer?

No. OpenAI says ads appear below the end of a response, marked as sponsored, kept visually apart from it. The answer is written by the chat model on its own. Your ad is a separate box underneath. That's a good thing for you. They've just read the answer, and your ad sits where they finished reading.

Can my ad carry a photo of my work?

The parts OpenAI lists for an ad are a title, the copy, and the page it points at. So I write ads as words, and I put the photos on the page they land on. OpenAI says it reads your landing page when it works out which chats your ad belongs in, so the photos sit where they still count.

What if someone hides my ad or reports it?

They can, and some will. OpenAI gives people a way to hide an ad or report it. You won't see who. Advertisers only get totals, like views and clicks, with no names attached. The fix is the same as anywhere. Make the ad plain about the job, so the people who click it actually wanted you.

Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers

  • ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
  • If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
  • Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
  • That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
  • Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
  • We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
  • Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
  • In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
  • Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.

If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.
