ChatGPT ads · locksmiths · Australia

Locked out at 2am. They ask ChatGPT who comes now.

Someone is standing at their own front door with no key. The phone in their hand is nearly flat. They type it into ChatGPT, and your ad can sit under what comes back. I write it and I run it. We work for free and you cover your own ad spend. We only get paid a cut of what it makes you.

What a locked out person types at 2am

They're typing one handed and they're not happy. The kind of thing that gets typed:

  • "locked out of my house, who can come now"
  • "I locked my keys in the car, how much to get it open"
  • "lost my only house key, can someone come tonight"
  • "how much to change all the locks after a break in"
  • "how much for a new car key with the chip in it"
  • "my front door lock won't turn, is it the lock or the door"
  • "can a locksmith open a safe if I've forgotten the code"

None of those are shopping. They want a name and a time. I write hints aimed at those chats, including the ones that never say the word locksmith.

Same hour work, so the clock is the offer

A locksmith gets rung in a panic more than most trades. The person is outside, it's dark, and the phone is nearly flat. They are not lining up 3 quotes. They ring whoever looks like they'll turn up.

So the ad sells the clock, not the price. How long until you're there, and the hours you really answer. The calm work runs as a second ad. A rekey when a tenant moves out, restricted keys, an upgrade after a break in.

An ad for someone standing at a locked door

There isn't much room in an ad. A title, one line, and the page it opens:

  • Title: "Locked out? I'm on my way"
  • Copy: "Home and car locksmith, day and night. You get the price before I drive. I open it without damage wherever I can."

Put your real time in it. If you take 40 minutes, write 40 minutes. A promise you can't keep loses the job and earns a bad review.

The rule changes by state, so check whether your number has to be in the ad itself, not only on your page. Send it to me either way and I put it in.

One screen, one hand, in a hurry

This page gets read standing up, one handed, in the cold. It has one job. ChatGPT reads it too, so it has to say what the ad said.

  • The time you'll be there. The one you'll stand behind at 2am, not the one that sounds best.
  • A phone number as the biggest thing on the screen. They press it, they don't read.
  • Your hours in plain words. Write 24/7 only if that's true.
  • What a call out costs, or how you work the price out.
  • That you open the door without damage wherever you can.

Who gets the 2am call now

Most lockouts probably go to whoever comes up first on a phone map. Not many people scroll when they're standing in the cold. Some go to a national number that farms the job out to a local bloke on a cut. Car lockouts often go to roadside cover before anyone thinks of a locksmith. The new one is the person who asks ChatGPT at the hour when nobody is answering a form.

No locksmith in Australia really knows about this yet, and if they do, they are doubtful because it is new.

One night of clicks, and what it pays

Say 20 clicks come in overnight. A click is someone tapping the ad. OpenAI suggests starting at US$3 to US$5 for one, US dollars, so a bit more here. At the top of that range the night costs US$100.

Say 1 of those 20 gets you out of bed. I made the 20 up, and month 1 is where your own number turns up.

Say that call out is worth $180 to you in our dollars, which is my made-up number. One of those barely covers the night, which is why this sum is tighter for a locksmith than for a roof or a deck. Tonight's lockout can turn into a lock change that week, so count what the call is really worth.

Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers

  • ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
  • If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
  • Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
  • That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
  • Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
  • We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
  • Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
  • In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
  • Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.

If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.

3 things locksmiths want to know

I'm at a lockout at 9pm. I can't watch an ad account.

You don't have to. That part is mine. I read the numbers and change what isn't working. Your job is the phone. A missed call is a wasted click, and the next locksmith gets the job.

Can it run only at night, when I'm the one answering?

OpenAI's help pages don't show hour by hour timing, so I can't set that up for you. The daily cap and the pause button are on the budget page for a tradie.

I've only got a Facebook page. Is that enough?

No. The ad needs a page with your hours on it and a number big enough to press. I build that one page for free, and your ad spend stays the only thing you pay for. If the ads make you nothing and we stop, that page comes down with them.

What to read before you ring me

How I run the ads, and what you pay, is on the ChatGPT ads page. A lockout is bought on who answers first, and what that means for the ad is on ChatGPT ads for service businesses. How the sum shifts from a call-out trade to a quoted one is on ChatGPT ads for tradies. The hop from the question to your ringing phone is how a ChatGPT ad turns into a lead. Night work and call out pricing work much the same for a sparky, so the electricians page is worth a read. When the door is the problem and not the lock, that job is on the carpenters page.

30 minutes, then a straight answer

30 minutes on the phone, mostly questions about your business and your customers. You get 2 straight answers. Do people ask ChatGPT for what you do? And is it worth a run, where we only get paid a rev-share or a retainer, sorted once you have seen the results, to find out?
