ChatGPT ads when you sell a service, not a product

You sell a job, not a thing off a shelf. So your ad has to say the work and the area, and get the phone to ring. Most of what's written about these ads is written for shops. This page is for the rest of us.

What a service ad does for you

Your ad has 3 parts: a title, the copy, and the page it sends people to. All 3 get read when ChatGPT picks which chats your ad belongs in. So all 3 say the same thing: the job, and the area you cover.

You don't bid on the words people type. You write hints instead. OpenAI says those hints describe the chats and topics where your service may be relevant. It says they guide the match, no more. For a service that means naming the job and the kinds of places and problems people mention.

The shopping side of these ads isn't your game

OpenAI has campaigns built around a product feed, which is a list of the things a shop sells. Those campaigns can pick a country and nothing smaller, so no state, city or postcode. A service has no product list, so that side is not where you sit. Every shopping guide you read about ChatGPT ads is aimed past you.

Some chats are off limits, whatever you sell

OpenAI says ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics. Health and money advertisers may be eligible if they meet its strict rules. There are no political ads, and no ads placed near personal health chats. Most trades sit nowhere near that line. If part of your work touches health or money, we check it before a dollar goes out.

The 8 trades I've written a page for

To see those 8 sorted by how the money works instead of by trade, ChatGPT ads for tradies splits them into the same-hour call-outs and the ones you quote and wait on.

Not on that list? The test is the same

Your trade doesn't have to be one of the 8. What matters is whether people ask ChatGPT about your job before they buy. OpenAI says people are often "comparing options, or deciding what to do next". If that's how your customers behave, a service ad has something to sit next to.

3 questions service businesses ask me

Can the ad only show in my suburb?

OpenAI doesn't publish which Australian areas it offers below country level. So the area goes in the hints, the ad and the page instead. How ChatGPT decides who sees your ad has the whole answer.

I've got no products. What goes in the ad?

The job, in the customer's words. A title, a line of copy, and a page that can take a call. Those 3 things are the ad. You're not filling in a catalogue, you're answering the question the person just typed.

Do I need a website before I start?

You need 1 page the ad can point at. It has to say the job, your area and a number, on the first screen. If you haven't got one, I build 1 page for the job the ad is chasing. If the ads make you nothing and we stop, that page comes down with them. The page your ad sends people to shows what that screen has to do.

Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers

  • ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
  • If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
  • Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
  • That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
  • Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
  • We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
  • Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
  • In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
  • Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.

If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.
