Should a small business run ChatGPT ads yet?
For most trades and service businesses, it's worth a look. For some, it's too early. There's a 3 question test that sorts it in about a minute. You don't need to know anything about ads to answer them. Here it is, with what a try costs you.
Question 1. Do people ask ChatGPT about what you do?
OpenAI says people use ChatGPT while they're making up their mind. In its words, they are often "comparing options, or deciding what to do next".
That's the person who's about to ring someone. If you fix things in people's homes, they're likely asking before they call. A blocked drain at 9pm. A quote for a new driveway.
If what you sell is grabbed off a shelf on a whim, this one is weaker. Ask yourself if a customer would type your job into a chat first.
Question 2. Can your page take a call?
The ad sends people to a page on your site. If the first screen is a big photo and your story, you lose the call. It needs the job, the areas you go to, and a number they can tap.
OpenAI also reads your landing page when it works out which chats your ad fits. So the page and the ad have to say the same thing.
Question 3. Do you know what a job is worth to you?
It's what you keep after materials and your time, not the invoice total. Pick that number now.
It tells you whether the ads paid. It's also how we both know when a lead has paid you.
Who this isn't for yet
- The phone rings out while you're on the tools. If nobody picks up, the ad has done its job and the call is gone.
- Health or money work. OpenAI keeps ads away from sensitive or regulated chats. OpenAI says health and money businesses can advertise only if they pass its strict checks.
- Politics. OpenAI doesn't take political ads at all.
- You can't say what a job is worth yet. Work that out first, or you'll argue about it later.
No page? I build the one page the ad needs, for free, and you still cover your own ad spend. If we stop running the ads, that page comes down with them.
What a try actually costs
You pay OpenAI for the ads. There are 2 main ways to pay. Per 1,000 times your ad is shown, or per click. A click is someone tapping your ad.
If you pay per click, OpenAI suggests starting with a top bid of US$3 to US$5. US dollars, so a bit more here. Check the rate the day you start. You also set a daily budget. Its own rule is that a day won't spend more than double that budget. A week won't go past 7 times it.
The smallest daily budget depends on the currency your account bills in. OpenAI doesn't publish that figure. You see it in the account when you get there.
The 2 ways in
Do it yourself. You sign up, add a card, write the ad, then watch the numbers every day. The step by step page lays out the order.
Or I do it for you. We set your ChatGPT ads up and we run them, for free. You only cover your own ad spend. You pay us a rev-share or a retainer, sorted once you have seen the results, agreed in writing before we start. The rest of the deal is at the bottom of this page.
4 questions small business owners ask me
Am I too small for this?
OpenAI opened self-serve ads to companies of all sizes. Small businesses and startups up to global brands. You sign up, add a card, pass the identity check and the ad review, and go. There's no sales meeting to sit through first.
What if I've never run an ad at all?
That's most of the people I talk to. You don't have to learn the tools, because I set it up and run it and you only cover your own ad spend. If you're weighing it against money you already put into Google, ChatGPT ads next to Google Ads answers that one.
How fast will I know?
Views and clicks update about every 15 minutes. Spend can lag 7 to 8 hours, so a spend of zero doesn't mean zero charges. Whether it brings paid work takes a month of real calls to answer.
What if people don't ask ChatGPT for my trade?
Then the clicks don't come, and you stop. You'd have paid OpenAI for any clicks it got, and nothing to me. One US business published its own test and got clicks but no leads. It's new, so the only way to know is to run it.
Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers
- ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
- If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
- Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
- That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
- Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
- We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
- Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
- In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
- Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.
If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.
