ChatGPT ads · what they cost · 2026
How much ChatGPT ads cost, in plain numbers
OpenAI says to start at US$3 to US$5 a click. You set a daily budget and OpenAI caps how far past it a day can go. There's no minimum spend published. Here's the money side, and the sum to do before you start.
You pay in 1 of 3 ways
When you build a campaign you pick what you're buying. Views means you pay for every 1,000 times your ad shows up. Clicks means you pay for each click that counts as a real one. A click is someone tapping the ad.
The third one aims at a result you choose, like a call or a filled in form. It still bills you per valid click, or per 1,000 times the ad shows. OpenAI says you are not billed for each result. Pick one carefully. You can't change it later, so a change means building a new campaign.
US$3 to US$5 a click, to start
For paying per click, OpenAI recommends starting with a top bid of US$3 to US$5 a click. US dollars, so a bit more here. Check the rate the day you start, because it moves.
A bid is the most you'll pay, not what you'll pay. The ad account, which OpenAI calls Ads Manager, shows you whether your bid is strong enough. OpenAI says it runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction between the ads that fit. In plain words, your money is not the only thing in it.
There's no minimum spend you can look up
People want a floor. OpenAI doesn't publish one. It says the smallest daily budget varies by the billing currency on the ad account. It doesn't give the amount. So the real answer is that you see it in the account when you get there.
OpenAI does tell new advertisers to start with a daily budget rather than a lump sum for the whole campaign.
The 2 caps that stop a runaway day
- A day can't spend more than twice the daily budget you picked.
- A 7 day stretch can't spend more than 7 times your daily budget.
- Example: a $30 daily budget can hit $60 on a busy Tuesday, and stops at $210 for the week.
One trap worth knowing. Your spend figure can lag 7 to 8 hours behind. So a zero on the screen doesn't mean nothing has been charged. More traps sit in the 7 ways a campaign wastes money.
Now the sum that actually matters
Cost per click is the wrong number to stare at. The number that decides it is what a job is worth to you. Here's the shape of it, in made up numbers.
Say a job is worth $600 to you. Say a click ends up costing you $6. And say 1 click in 20 turns into a phone call. That's $120 of ad spend for 1 call. If that call becomes the job, you're $480 up on the day.
Those are an example, not a result. I made up the $6 and the 1 in 20. Nobody can tell you your real number for ChatGPT ads yet, and you should not believe anyone who says they can. The page on what's known goes through the only published test I can find. For setting the number in your trade, read how much a tradie should put behind it.
What I cost, on top of that
Nothing to start with. We work for you for free. The only money moving is yours, to OpenAI, for clicks you can count. After that you pay us a rev-share or a retainer, sorted once you have seen the results, agreed in writing before we start. The rest of it is in the block below.
3 questions people ask me about the money
What's the smallest I could sensibly start with?
Whatever buys enough clicks to learn something. At a bid near OpenAI's suggested range, a small daily budget buys a handful of clicks a day. We'd set it together against what a job is worth to you, then watch the first week and move it.
Could I get a bill I wasn't expecting?
Your daily budget caps it. A day stops at twice that budget and a week stops at 7 times it. The one thing to watch is the delay. Spend can show up 7 to 8 hours late. A screen reading zero isn't proof that nothing has been charged.
Is it cheaper than what I'm paying now?
I can't tell you that, and neither can anyone else yet. What is known, and what isn't, is on do ChatGPT ads work. What I can do is put a small budget behind it for a month. Then I count what comes back and show you both sets of numbers.
Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers
- ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
- If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
- Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
- That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
- Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
- We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
- Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
- In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
- Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.
If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.
