ChatGPT ads · Australia · 2026
ChatGPT ads are live in Australia. Here's what that means.
Ads have been showing here since April 2026. An ad can sit under the answer, in a box marked sponsored. Only people on the free ChatGPT plans see one. Here's what's running in Australia, and what nobody can tell you yet.
Ads have been showing here since April 2026
An Australian trade paper reported in late March 2026 that OpenAI said ads were coming here in the coming weeks. Australian agencies put the go live date at 17 April 2026, and OpenAI hasn't published that date itself. So I'll say it the way I can back it up. Ads have been showing in Australia since April 2026.
In May, OpenAI gave Australian advertisers more ways to buy the ads and more ways to count what they get back. So this is about 5 months old here, and the tools under it have already changed once in that time. That is why I read OpenAI's own pages again every month before I tell you anything about them.
The audience here is the free plan
Ads show only to people on the Free and Go plans, and not to anyone OpenAI identifies as under 18. Free is the plan people use without paying for it. Go is OpenAI's low-cost plan. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts never see an ad.
So this is a slice of the people asking, not all of them. Whether that slice holds your customers is the real question. The whole of it is pulled apart in who actually sees a ChatGPT ad.
Can an Australian business buy them yet?
Yes. Agencies here have been buying since April 2026, and OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager is open. A brand new account may have to run in its home country first. OpenAI opened Ads Manager in May 2026 so businesses of every size could sign up and buy ads directly. Before any ad runs, your identity check and your billing have to be done, and the ad has to pass a review.
That limit is worth knowing about. Some new self serve ad accounts can only advertise in their home country at first. Other countries open up once the identity check passes and you've spent enough at home. For a tradie in Sydney, home is where the work is. So that limit costs you nothing.
Two things OpenAI hasn't published for Australia
The US started testing on 9 February 2026. We came later, and 2 parts of this are still fuzzy on our side.
First, where the ad points. You pick a country, and Australia is one you can pick. Under that, OpenAI says you can target states or regions, cities and postcodes where available, and it doesn't publish the list for Australia. So a suburb is not something I promise anyone here. Why the chat itself does most of the aiming is on how ChatGPT decides who sees your ad.
Second, personalised ads. Those are ads picked partly from what that person has chatted about before. OpenAI names the European Economic Area and Switzerland as places where personalised ads are off at first. Any person can switch personalising off for themselves. Then their ads get picked from the current chat alone.
Agencies here are already selling it
A handful of Australian agencies have had a ChatGPT ads page up since the middle of 2026. So it's no secret in the agency world. What I don't see is trade businesses running them. That's my own read from the work I do, not a number I can show you. If you'd rather hand it over, my agency page spells out how I get paid.
4 things a tradie should do first
- Open ChatGPT on a free account. Ask it what your customer would ask. See what comes back under the answer.
- Write down what a job is worth to you. Without that number you can't tell if an ad paid.
- Look at the page your ad would send people to. If there's no phone number on the first screen, fix that first.
- Then pick a way in. Set it up yourself, or let us run them for you for free, where you cover only your own ad spend.
Doing it yourself is fair enough, and the step by step page covers it.
2 questions Australians ask me
Are the ads really running here, or is it a US thing?
They're running here. Where that April 2026 date comes from, and who put it there, is at the top of this page.
Is it too early to bother with this?
It's early, and I'll say so. OpenAI's ad tool is still in testing, what it calls a beta, and it keeps changing. It's about 5 months old in Australia. That's the reason we work for you for free. You find out on my time, and the only money out is your own ad spend.
Let ChatGPT show your business to high-intent customers
- ChatGPT has released paid ads, and this changes the marketing game absolutely.
- If you missed out on Facebook ads in 2007, where anything you posted would have popped off, don't miss out on the next big ad platform.
- Unlike Facebook, where people get interrupted mid doom-scroll, ChatGPT shows your business to people who are already researching something related.
- That makes ChatGPT a cheat code. The engine your customers ask for advice shows your business right under its answer.
- Most marketing agencies charge you thousands before you see any results.
- We work for you, for free. You just cover your own ad spend. The first month is free, so you see the results for yourself before you pay us anything.
- Then, if you want to keep getting those results month after month, we sort out a rev-share or a retainer. A rev-share is a cut of what it makes you. A retainer is a flat monthly fee. Agreed in writing before month 2 starts.
- In the free month, we don't get paid if you don't get paid. After that, it's the rev-share or the retainer you chose.
- Only 10 a month. The work up front is heavy and brings us no income at first. That is all we can take.
If the ads make you nothing, you pay us nothing and we stop there. You will have paid OpenAI for the clicks, and that is all.

Money is usually the next question, so what ChatGPT ads cost lays out the numbers OpenAI publishes. Then have a look at ChatGPT ads next to Google Ads, because most tradies are already paying for one of them.
30 minutes, then a straight answer
30 minutes on the phone, mostly questions about your business and your customers. You get 2 straight answers. Do people ask ChatGPT for what you do? And is it worth a run, where we only get paid a rev-share or a retainer, sorted once you have seen the results, to find out?
